It is really brilliant when ‘adventure day’ aligns with amazing clear sunny skies.
Through the years my family and I have spent a bit of time exploring the area around Lake Hawea in the Southern Lakes District. We love being surrounded by such amazing mountain landscapes and the elevated rolling hills that can be seen in between.
Recently we packed a sizeable picnic lunch and decided to spend the day walking to the trig on Mount Grandview which is nicely tucked to one side of Lake Hawea towering over the beautiful patchwork land of Hawea Flat below.
The access track passes through Lake Hawea Station.. which is the home to many merino sheep. It is such a huge beautiful place ..it is almost like finding plump wooly sheep thriving in the wild.
As the trail zig zags through a space where many sheep were spread out quietly walking around nibbling grass in the sun.. it was possibly as much a surprise to us as it was to them when their head would pop up and our eyes meet.
The ground remained frozen for the entirety of our climb. When we reached the top there was only the tiniest breeze. Looking down to the lake was like looking across a silky blue mirror.
It was one of those day when you reach the top.. but don’t really want to leave. It was only knowing that the sun would be setting that prompted our decent, knowing we did not want to be going down the last stretch of the valley in the dark.
This is where my family waved as I ran ahead as we made our way back down to the valley trail below. Absolutely glorious. Beautiful day.. my happy tank spilling over looking out at such amazing views, feeling the sun on my face and the rhythm of my foot steps.
Passing back through the sheep I could not help but stop to take photos while my family caught up. It was a real highlight, especially through the latter half of the decent when my oldest decided she was happy to run along with me. Absolutely awesome to be moving into a chapter of sharing an experience along side. 🩵
